CUNY Rising: College Activists Mobilize Campus-Wide 3-Day Social Forum

NYC10 Oct 2008
Battered by budget cuts and burdensome tuition costs while facing an indifferent administration, students at the City University of New York (CUNY) will hold a three-day gathering to chart a course for reviving campus activism.

The CUNY Social Forum will be held at the City College campus in Harlem Oct. 17 to 19. The goal is to bring together students, adjuncts and faculty from across CUNY’s 23 campuses to share their experiences and strategize around a host of important issues including tuition hikes, the university’s increasing reliance on low-wage adjuncts, restoring open admissions and defending ethnic and gender studies programs. Organizers also envision CUNY as a place where student, faculty and the community have meaningful decision-making power. Police Continue Harassment of Texas Activists in Wake of RNC

Houston09 Oct 2008
Over a month after the conclusion of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, the FBI continues to harass and intimidate activists who chose to voice their opinions about the status quo. In the last ten days, five activists in Houston and Austin have received subpoenas to appear before a Federal Grand Jury in Minneapolis on October 21. Several other activists have had their homes, or those of parents and friends, visited by the FBI.

According to the FBI, the Texas activists, like the RNC Welcoming Committee, fell victim to an FBI informant. As a result, two Texans, David McKay and Bradley Crowder, remain incarcerated in Minneapolis, facing ten years each for allegedly possessing Molotov cocktails. Because the Grand Jury in the McKay–Crowder case has already returned an indictment, it is suspected that the current subpoenas relate to a separate case. The Enclosed Public: Protest and Premonitions at the Vice-Presidential Debate in St. Louis

St. Louis07 Oct 2008
A record television audience of almost 70 million people viewed the vice-presidential debate last Thursday night at Washington University's Athletic Complex in St. Louis. But nearly a mile out of view of the complex lay an example of what corporations, the media, and the state have together tried to quell in increasingly forceful ways: public dissent.

Over one hundred workers, activists, students, veterans and families gathered in Northmoor park near campus to voice alternatives to the candidates' discussion of abstract policy issues. Activist groups Instead of War, Code Pink, and Veterans for Peace organized the protest to highlight the narrow scope of the debate, and to expose the carefully mediated lack of public access to discussions of public policy. Protests greet Palin Visit to California

Indybay and LA06 Oct 2008
From Los Angeles Indymedia: Clouds grayed the sky, but did not hamper attendance at either of the two anti-Sarah Palin rallies. Hundreds of activists arrived at both events to denounce the vice-presidential hopeful for her misogyny, ignorance, pettiness, and anti-democratic tendencies. A diversity among attendees and willingness to communicate characterized the day, particularly in Costa Mesa. Story/Photos: Women denounce Sarah Palin in Carson and Costa Mesa

From Indybay: Sarah Palin flew into San Francisco to attend a GOP fundraiser on October 5 but did not speak publicly and won't be staying a minute longer than necessary to collect money in the bay area. Several hundred angry protesters gathered in front of the Hyatt-Regency Hotel in Burlingame, adjacent to the San Francisco airport, to demonstrate their displeasure with the GOP platform. Following the vice-presidential candidates recent debate with Democratic candidate Joe Biden, many protesters' signs referred to Palin as an outright liar. Others took issue with her extremist views on abortion. Read More: Hundreds of Demonstrators Rally Outside Palin Fundraiser near San Francisco

Battle in Seattle Draws Both Praise and Criticism from Activists

San Francisco Bay Area01 Oct 2008
Battle in Seattle Playing in the Bay Area Reviewers familiar with anti-globalization protests have both praise and criticism for the film. Among the latter are concerns about accurate portrayal of protesters, although director Stuart Townsend said he chose not to take sides and that the film is a work of fiction based on real events. Bay area activist and arts organizer David Solnit worked with the director to help recreate scenes from 1999. He and others who participated in the Seattle protests had limited influence on the script. Some activists also called on people to speak up and reclaim history and to not allow the movie to tell an untrue story of the WTO demonstrations.

On a positive note, the movie has been praised by some for covering the history of criminal activity performed by the WTO and for its depiction of the effect of the demonstrations on people’s lives [...] While some praise Townsend for portraying protesters as sympathetic characters, others criticize his glamorization of a mainstream media fictional heroine. Ironically, WTO activists gave birth to indymedia in 1999 precisely because corporate media focuses on violence and confrontation and portrays protesters negatively... Read More

Mother of Murdered Air Force Airman Blanca Luna Seeks Justice

Houston30 Sep 2008
On March 7, 2008, Senior Airman Blanca Adriana Luna of Chicago was found stabbed to death in her hotel room on Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Blanca was due to graduate from her training course and return to Chicago in three days. Since then a veritable Kafkaesque tale has been emerging. Members of the Air Force visited Blanca's mother, Gloria Barrios, to inform her that her only child had been the victim of a homicide, "but not to worry - she had a $400,000 life insurance policy"! Now there have been intimations of suicide even though her body displayed signs of a defensive struggle. The Air Force's Office of Special Investigation fails to provide straight answers to anything. Moreover, they have refused to release any personal property, a death certificate, or a police report (the claim is there is none!).

This case fits into a pattern of violence against members of the military - particularly, women - being swept under the rug. The Air Force would rather explain a suicide than receive the negative publicity of a homicide on base; plus, the family would lose beneficiary rights to Blanca's insurance payout. However, for Gloria, it is about justice, not money.

Mrs. Gloria Barrios, mother of US Air Force Senior Airman Blanca Luna has requested to met with officials of the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) at Sheppard Air Force (in Witchita Falls Texas) base on Friday, October 3, 2008 to determine the status of the investigation into her daughter’s death. read full article | Justice for Blanca Luna Campaign | Justice for Blance Luna Benefit from Chicago IMC

Marcella "Sali" Grace Eiler Raped and Murdered in Oaxaca

IMC-US28 Sep 2008
Marcella "Sali" Grace Eiler, solidarity worker with the people's struggle in Oaxaca and Chiapas, was found dead last week in a deserted cabin with signs of a brutal rape and murder. A native of Eugene, OR, Sali had helped with documentation accompaniment, and gave reportbacks on the movement in Arizona. To the left is one of her photos taken in Oaxaca, which reads: "You can not call somebody dead who fought for life." Read on for more links to Sali's photos and stories.

From the Newswires: Brother and sisters, Our hearts are full of sadness and rage because our sister Sali was brutally raped and murdered 20 minutes from San Jose del Pacifico... Sali mentioned that recently in Oaxaca she had suffered political persecution and surveillance. This makes us think that her cowardly murderer is related to the widespread repression against the social movement and directed particularly at international observers. From NarcoNews: On Friday night, Mexican police transferred Omar Yoguez Singu, 32, to the Oaxacan attorney general's custody for murdering 20-year-old Marcella "Sally" Grace Eiler... Yoguez Singu was captured thanks to the quick action of Oaxacan activists who publicized her murder internationally... Activists were quick to place Sally's murder in the context of rampant unchecked violence against women in Oaxaca [and Mexico in general]. They note that aggressors are hardly ever punished for their crimes. "There is no justice in Oaxaca," said a spokesperson for the Popular Indigenous Council of Oaxaca - Ricardo Flores Magon (CIPO-RFM). Protesters Demand No Bailout Of Bad Debts of the Financial Industry

San Francisco Bay Area26 Sep 2008
The Bush Administration has proposed that the federal government provide $700 billion to buy bad debt from financial institutions. The financial bailout comes in response to a "credit crisis" largely caused by a drop in housing prices combined with defaults on home loans caused by shady and often illegal lending practices. While the bailout will help financial institutions that own derivatives based on mortgages, it will do little to help the more than 2 million Americans who lost their homes to foreclosure last year.

On Thursday September 25th, protests took place around the United States to oppose the proposed $700 Billion bailout of Wall Street firms. In the Bay Area, protests were held in San Francisco, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and San Jose... read More | Photo from Protest on Wall St. from NYC-IMC

*SCAM WARNING!!* Rental-Data Bureau's (aka RDB, rental-data.com) Predatory Practices

If you are seeking rental property in the Portland Metro area you may have run across their NUMEROUS "Call RDB" house listing ads online. The ads often list enticingly low prices in attractive areas, yet NEVER offer an address or a photo.

Avoid these people and their dubious 'service' like the plague on free society they are. They republish a database of freely obtained house listings from off the net and charge RENTERS $35 to see their substandard imageless database. They illegitimately spam the free classified sites with their 'listings' which are in reality only ads for their website 'service'. They use phony bait and switch tactics by listing enticing properties in their ads that do not exist in the database once you become a member.

An Open Letter To The Person Who Abandoned Two Cats

11 Oct 2008
Odds are you will never read this. Odds are you are not someone who reads the animal rights section of IndyMedia. Perhaps some dream spirit will whisper into your ear as you sleep tonight, "shame on you." Perhaps you will wake with a twinge of guilt, and perhaps you will never repeat your cruel act.

About a month ago you abandoned two juvenile, unneutered male cats at the back of the apartment complex I live in. Either you moved away and left them, or you crept your car along the dirt road behind my place and shoved two confused and frightened youngsters out the door. The method doesn't matter. You abandoned them. You shoved your responsibility out the door and went on with your life.

Anything planned for Indigenous People's day this year (aka "destroy Columbus" day)?

11 Oct 2008
Just trying to figure out if anything is planned for that day, haven't been able to find anything conclusive. Well that time of the year (October 13th) nears again when thinly veiled white supremacist pro-genocidal sentiments are publicly aired by the powers that be; they call it "Columbus day" after the confused imperialist who was discovered by indigenous peoples of the (so called) American continent lost at sea. As a person of European descent I personally curse that day, but I also want to remember and celebrate the 500÷ years of waged resistance to colonial and neo-colonial occupation that has occurred from the higher latitudes of "Canada" and "Alaska" south to farthest reaches of "Chile" and "Argentina." Some people would dismiss this resistance as only of historical importance, but the truth is that the struggle continues to this very day.

11 Oct 2008

Now, it does not surprise me that a classist ass like Rick Steves would support horrific animal cruelty, but it does surprise me that OPB would support such a thing. I am horrified.

Please contact OPB to let them know what happens to geese whose bellies are force fed until their livers explode. Tell them how cruel this practice is, and how unbelievable it is that OPB would support such a thing. And if you are an OPB member, please cancel your membership and tell them why. Cleveland Jobs with Justice joins National Day of Action

Junk Food for Junk Bonds

On Wednesday, October 1st, Cleveland Jobs with Justice participated in a National Day of Action with 12 other local Jobs with Justice Coalitions. Community, faith and labor advocates conducted rallies, street theater, bake sales and ‘billionaires for bail-outs’ actions to tell Congress and Wall Street that people are fed up with corporate greed and demanded a “Main Street Recovery Plan.” In solidarity our message was clear! We were telling Congress “No Bail-out!” unless they addressed the following:

  • Make the people that created and profited from the mess pay for the clean-up, now.
  • Any infusion of capital must have specific, binding public ownership requirements.
  • Restructure and rein in the reckless private financial institutions.
  • Pass a real recovery plan, for Main Street as well as Wall Street, paid for with progressive taxation,
that addresses the needs for good jobs, affordable housing, health care, pensions, infrastructure and ‘green’ economy
